Slogans and Uni High
“Make America Great Again!”, “Jobs and Growth”, “Strong and stable leadership”. These are some of the political slogans being used by politicians around the world. Do these phrases really work and could a slogan be beneficial to our school? “Make America Great Again” is one of the most well known political phrase ever. Many use this phrase to mock Donald Trump, but it was one of the most effective political phrases in modern times. Not only did Trump spread it into the media but he turned it into a product that millions wore during his campaign. Even thought the phrase was widely mocked, it got media coverage, spreading his image and message even wider. The key to Trump's phrase is that it captures many people's nostalgia for a time when everything was perceived to be great.
However, some phrases were not as successful; in the recent UK election Theresa May used the phrase: “Strong and Stable Leadership”, so much so that it is believed that she lost popularity because of it, as she was consistently ridiculed for always repeating it. It got to a point where one journalist asked her, mid interview, if she was just going to say “we need strong and stable leadership” for entirety of that interview. Similarly to Mrs. May, Australia's own Malcolm Turnbull had an unsuccesful political slogan; "Jobs and Growth", however for different reasons. The phrase got so little media attention that the only time his slogan was ever discussed on a radio talk show.
Currently the University High School's motto is "strenue ac fideliter" which roughly translates to "with vigour and faith", which is a representation of the school's values. As can be seen in the three aforementioned slogans, a slogan doesn’t work if it is overused, isn’t catchy or can’t work on a product. If Uni High were to have a change of slogan, it should to be to one that is catchy and marketable; one that would have students willing to wear school clothing, spreading the schools name and reputation.
