The Importance of Connection During COVID-19
By Tong Hui Ye
The coronavirus disease pandemic has caused stress and loneliness in the vast majority, but the negative feelings differ by the extent. Some feel anxious, worry or fear, some develop apprehension about going to public spaces, some even have physical symptoms such as increased heart rate or fatigue. But remember, these are completely common and understandable in the face of significant changes. This period is definitely uncertain to the majority of us, but we are doing our utmost to deal with rapid changes to our lives. As social beings, we rely on safe, secure social surroundings to survive and thrive, when the requirement cannot be met, the feelings of loneliness and vulnerability are likely to be heightened, for some it may be temporary, but for others, it may be long-term.
Connectedness is exceptionally important in this time of difficulty. Personally, I think the support from family members and friends can definitely bring a sense of comfort and stability. Physical distancing does not equal social disconnection. Technology provides a platform to receive and give support remotely. I particularly suggest talking through your concerns, thoughts and feelings with trusted people rather than hiding the negative feelings and get overwhelmed by them. Additionally, I think spending time with pets, such as dogs or cats, as they can allow you to feel supported in the constant companionship - plus their need to be kept active can get you out of the house for essential exercises, this way it releases endorphins and promotes positive feelings.
Exploring creative hobbies can allow you to spend time more meaningfully. I’ve been doing jigsaws, revising my piano pieces, cooking and trying different recipes, and also sitting on the balcony with a favourite book in hand. When time is occupied, we won’t focus much on our negative feelings, as we develop enjoyable hobbies and interests.
There are multiple online support and resources to provide mental health support. You can make appointments with psychologists when required, or using various mobile apps to do meditation exercises, as they can help you stay grounded and calm in the midst of an emotional storm.
Remember: WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER! No one is alone.
