Essentially, the film begins with two children running whilst a group of adults play hide and seek - but with a twist. The director then takes a time jump 30 years into the future with Grace - a foster child, played by Samara Weaving, on her wedding day. Her fiancé, Alex, introduces her to his family: The Le Domases. It is a family tradition that when someone is married into the family, they must engage in a ceremony where they play a game. Unfortunately, Grace pulls out the ‘hide and seek’ card and everything changes. She has until sunrise to hide or else all members of the Le Domases will have to kill her.
