What's Going On?
Written By Zifa Tanner-Kamal
Introduction
All through Uni High, there seem to be discrepancies around every corner. A door that should’ve been locked, a mysterious thump in the attic, a staircase that you could’ve sworn wasn’t there yesterday. In fact, over two-thirds of students are convinced something fishy is going on. Is it just an old school with its many quirks, or is this a sign of something hidden under the surface? My investigative team and I decided to find out. What we found is somewhat revealing…

The University High School was founded in 1910. That’s over 100 years ago. In a school this old, there are bound to be a certain number of unexplained nooks and crannies.
You know the ones; the staircase behind the canteen, the cupboard under the middle staircase in the north building, the attic, the weird door in the west wing. These were the ones we chose anyhow.
As you could expect, we didn’t really know how we were going to get behind these locked doors, but, surprisingly, we had willing assistance. Assistant Principal Chris Jones was all too happy to show us around and answer our questions. Writing Editing Publishing teacher, Bridget Costelloe, suggests his willingness to help is due to him “fancying himself as Uni High’s Julian Assange.”
This is what we found.
At the bottom of the staircase behind the canteen there is a large door that says “DANGER. No access without permission from the principal. This room may not be used as a storeroom”.
There were also oddly enough, a lot of things being stored, which seems like a violation of the instructions on the door. Something to think about. The cupboard under the stairs did not have a wizard boy in it. In fact, there wasn’t even any boy in it, other than Mr Jones, the biggest boy around. The cupboard was a hibernation cave for the school’s Christmas tree, which supposedly gets put in the foyer every year, but has anyone ever seen it? In the cupboard, there were also old floor plans of the school, which is mildly interesting, and boxes of stationery, which is wildly uninteresting.
Our next location was the west wing rooms. The reader may be aware of the doors adjacent to rooms 262/263? This investigation wasn’t even conceived by us, but Mr Jones had sensed our disappointment at our previous locations and wanted to give us something to write about. He tried his best.
Some students may know these rooms as old projection rooms for Sharman hall, and they would be entirely correct. There were some old projectors and some weird graffiti.
You might be thinking, that looks like a cult symbol, right? Well, we thought the same. Alas, after hours of intense googling, I could come up with only one thing.

Apparently, they have a cult following amongst ye olde projector technicians.
The attic is another story altogether. Mr Jones told us we weren’t allowed up for safety reasons, but he would get one of the caretakers to send us some photos of the air conditioning units up there, which were definitely the only thing there anyway. We never got the photos. I guess they were busy.
That, unfortunately, was the extent of our investigation. If there’s something going on, we didn’t find it. As far as we can tell, there isn’t anything sinister under the surface of UHS, just a lot of disorganisation. Yet, this mystery remains unsolved. I can only hope that someone someday will get to the bottom of it all. As disappointing as all this is, I can say that I definitely got to know the school a lot better, so maybe it wasn’t a complete waste of time.
