Sexual Orientation: Finding the Right Word

Everyday the language used in regards to sexual orientation changes; society changes the meanings of words and new words are created. In the ever-expanding world of sexual identity, understanding the meanings of the words used to describe sexual orientation can be extremely useful, especially when you’re new to the topic.

In today’s society there are three basic types of sexual orientations: monosexual, polysexual and asexual. The words used to describe individuals in each category varies greatly, so we thought we’d give you a short and comprehensive list.

 

MONOSEXUAL SEXUAL ORIENTATIONS

Some people are solely attracted to people of only one gender. Monosexual labels include:

  • Gay: The word gay applies to men who are exclusively attracted to other men. It is also occasionally used to describe anyone who is attracted to someone of their same gender.

  • Lesbian: The word lesbian refers to women who are exclusively attracted to other women.

 

POLYSEXUAL ORIENTATIONS

  

People who identify as polysexual are attracted to multiple genders. Polysexual labels include:

  • Bisexual : Bisexual is a word used to describe people who are attracted to two or more genders

  • Pansexual : If you are pansexual you are attracted to people regardless of gender, meaning there is no limit in sexual orientation in regard to biological sex, gender, or gender identity.

  • Polysexual: Polysexuals feel attractions to many genders, but not all.

 

ASEXUAL SEXUAL ORIENTATIONS

Some people do not experience sexual attraction. The majority of people that is applies to identify as asexual.

  • Asexual : If you are asexual you will be not sexually attracted to anyone and / or have no inclination to act on attraction
