Where did you go to high school?

Ms. Schwartz: Balwyn High School.

What is your best memory from high school?

Ms. Schwartz:  I loved drawing and painting.

What were your favourite subjects in high school?

Ms. Schwartz:  My favourite subjects were History and Literature.

Who were your role models in high school?

Ms. Schwartz: I think, probably, my older sister because she was an artist like me and interested in similar things.

How much older was she?

Ms. Schwartz:  Eight and a half years.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Ms. Schwartz:  I like to walk and go to small cafes, talk to friends and make artwork.

Cafes like Starbucks?

Ms. Schwartz:  No, not like Starbucks. More like independent small businesses.

Why do you like small cafes?

Ms. Schwartz:  The reason why I like small cafes is because of the feel of them, the atmosphere and the aesthetics of them.

Have you been to a cat cafe?

Ms. Schwartz:  No, sadly I am allergic to cats.

Where are some places that you have been to?

Ms. Schwartz:  I have been to Tokyo in Japan, and I have been to New York in America. Japan was fascinating and I found it visually very exciting. It’s a very beautiful place.

What inspires you when you make artwork?

Ms. Schwartz:  Students inspire me, I really enjoy working with young people and I am inspired by all kinds of creative things. So it might be visual art, but it also might be theatre, might be the music, could be a dance. I am inspired by all creative things made by other people.

Do you have a favourite artist?

Ms. Schwartz:  Not one specific artist, but I do very much enjoy the work of Richard Tuttle and Louise Bourgeois.

Richard Tuttle is an American post-minimalist artist known for his small, subtle and intimate works. His art makes use of scale and line.

Louise Bourgeois is a French-American artist best known for her large-scale sculpture and instillation art. Louise Bourgeois is also a prolific painter and printmaker.
