3rd Music of the Issue
Written by Ruwan Jinadasa
As currently we are all in lockdown, why not increase your music taste and hopefully find some new artists that you like! With every issue, we will include a list of 4 songs and 1 album of the issue. Hopefully you enjoy them!!
Song 1
Our Deal - Best Coast (Indie rock, Power pop)
Best Coast is a duo from Los Angeles. Our Deal is from their album Crazy For You, which turned 10 years old this year! Our deal has really nice tropical, punk undertones, completing Crazy for you’s pleasantly retro and refreshing sound. The whole record almost sounds like one artfully blurry dream, bursting with Cosentino’s honeyed vocals and Bruno’s Beach Boys–inspired groove. Our Deal is a love story between two forbidden lovers, and omg the music video is so sad ahhh. Best Coast is a great band to check out if you like indie pop! And then just realised their new album Always Tomorrow, which is really good but I prefer Crazy For You, solely because of the nice dreamy-ness the album has.
Song 2
Too Late, Colin - Lunar Vacation (Indie pop, Psychedelic Rock )
Lunar Vacation is a group of friends who have released a few Eps, (all amazing) with a dreamy sound, with surfy progressions and psych-rock melodies. I really like this song specifically because it has a really nice psychedelic rock beat to it and is a song you can just sit and listen to :)
Song 3
Mystery - Jesse Jo Stark (Alternative, Indie)
This song sounds like how I would imagine summer to sound like. It has a very exposed guitar line that goes through arpeggios through the whole song, complementing the soft vocals by Stark. Mystery has mellow, but bluesy tones, creating a groovy waltz which fits in with Stark’s gently psychedelic 1960’s pop feel. Stark describes the song as being stuck in a moment paralysed in love. Stark’s music is what alternative music has been missing, representing the future of rock intertwined with a wink to the past.
Song 4
Moon and Stars – 1nonly (Hip-hop/Rap)
1nonly’s songs are really nice to just listen and relax to. He mixes really cool beats with well flowing lyrics. The instrumentals almost remind me of lo-fi hip-hop beats, and are all very unique. All of his songs are fun to listen to, especially while doing work. Moon and Stars is about a guy who’s fallen in love with a girl, confessing his love to her. Right now, he has only put out singles but I’m excited to see what music he puts out in future! You should definitely give him a listen, Forever In Lover is probably my second favourite song of his, especially due to the blissful instrumentals, a nice feel the music has.
Album of the Issue
Oncle Jazz – Men I Trust (Indie pop, Dream pop)
Men I Trust is a Canadian Indie pop band who describe their music as “calm melodies and smooth songs that relax, but make your right foot tap and your chin bounce on the beats”. The softness of this album really completes it as a whole, letting you travel to another much calmer atmosphere, surrounding yourself with dreamy beats. Numb and I Hope to Be Around are probably my favourite songs of this record. Oncle Jazz has warm guitars producing a jazzy sound, and alluringly subdued vocals, that creates a stretched, spacious and unique sound. The way I would describe this album is like a smooth wave that quietly breaks ashore. They are also an independent band, who refused to be signed to a label, because they said that their focus is to “spread the band’s music and aesthetic” rather than commercial success. I highly recommend giving this album a listen!
As always, hope you liked it and feel free to leave a comment!
