Letters Against ISO
Written by Ajna Lacevic
At the beginning of Term 3, many students and teachers volunteered to participate in writing letters to the elderly as coronavirus cases continued to rise in aged care homes. Due to stage 4 restrictions, the residents were more vulnerable to loneliness and isolation during this time, thus began the journey and innovation of Letters Against ISO.
Also known as LAISO, it began this year in February, with CEO Hannah's aim to "help bridge the gap between young people and the elderly, building connections via pen and paper". The elderly suddenly faced separation from the world and had to sit alone on different tables while eating. One of the residents wrote that 'this period was the Great Depression all over again.'
A couple of months later, the organisation grew and expanded to various schools and writers to volunteer in the project. LAISO was able to reach over 1,500 residents by sending more than 2,000 letters with over 950 worldwide writers. In Melbourne, 14 schools (including Uni High) have participated in this opportunity. Both the writers and residents have felt the importance and difference by connecting through writing. It provides comfort, support and lights up the receiver's day by putting a smile on their face.
I have written letters weekly to 5 residents in aged-care homes. It was not time-consuming or difficult to do as you speak from the heart. I would usually start with a draft and re-write it on a fresh piece of paper as well as adding some drawings on the sides. When I did my first letter, it came so naturally, and it soon became a habit of mine to continue writing. I familiarised myself with a similar structure every time I wrote. The experience gave me a sense of comfort and happiness as this was benefiting both sides.
The organisation provides many options and tips for writing letters, for instance, how often you would like to write the letters or writing in another language, and they also encourage you to present it in your unique style. There are only three easy and simple steps to get involved:
1) Sign up by clicking here
2) They will send you a code with instructions
3) You write and scan your letter and email it to them
Letters Against ISO provides beneficial advantages to the writer and receiver as it is not time-consuming and it's easy-to-do. Remember: it's not the quantity or quality, it's, the thought that counts.
Put your heart into it.
