A Venture into Junior Debating
By Ruby Clayton Dowling
Recently University High School along with many other schools participated in a Junior Debating Competition and Workshop hosted by DAV (Debaters Association of Victoria). Students from the year levels of 7-8 were invited to participate. The competition went for four weeks, the first being a workshop session in which we learnt the rules of debating. The adjudicators put on a model debate to show the young debaters how debating works and then the skills they learnt were put into action. In the following sessions debaters participated in debates against other school.
The Junior Debating Competition and Workshop was a great opportunity for young debaters to build their skills and practise debating. It was also a great way to meet new people and strengthen collaboration skills. The whole debating environment was very friendly and welcoming and although there was an element of competition everyone was there to have fun. Overall UHS junior debaters did a great job and were incredibly successful in their competitions. Most students received great results and feedback but most importantly had an amazing experience. Thank you to everyone who helped organise and participated in junior debating at University High School.
