How Much Does Your Outfit Cost?
Inspired by the famous videos by youtuber The Unknown Vlogs, Ubique’s Art Director and Fashion Correspondent DK Doan interviewed some students of Uni High on a sunny Friday afternoon.
This new recurring Ubique article seeks to chronicle the style of Uni High students, including where they shop, and where they find inspiration.
The first volume of this series focuses on a group of year 12s, whose style can be described as alternative, non-conforming, and creative. Andrew, Ruby, and Violet’s style expresses their artistic and creative nature, conveying an immediate sense of a deviation from society’s normal.

Ruby: Top - I think this was like $2 from the Craigieburn [Savers or] something.
I don’t even know how much these pants were.
Violet: Are they from that weird shop on Lygon St?
Ruby: Probably, so probably like 50 bucks.
Creps - these are like $20.
And then, sunglasses from Magic Dollar on Sydney road. I bought these for like $5-6 or something.
And then, this jumper, from Icy Baby, I don’t know, I think it was 15 bucks?
And this bag, this bag was ****ing expensive, like $400.
DK: $400!?
Ruby: Yeah, it was a present.
DK: Talk us through your drip.
Ruby: I found this [necklace] under my bed, and then [the rings and necklace], on the floor somewhere?
DK: What inspires you when you’re getting dressed?
I don’t know, just kind of like-
Violet: Farmer’s market aunty? Britney spears?
Andrew: Y2K slut? Repurposed womenswear, like mums-wear.
Ruby: Yeah it’s a bit maternity. [Maybe] young pregnant women.
Andrew: Teen mums.

Violet Spirason
DK: Violet! Talk us through your outfit.
Violet: Shoes were free, I took them from Matilda’s op shop bag,
This skirt used to be a dress, and I chopped it into a skirt. And I think I got it for probably $10 from Footscray Savers.
And this top, I got it from The Sweatshop, from Shein, for like $4 or something.
My evil eye necklace, I got it from the op shop, it was probably $2.
This pearl one was $5 from an op shop. This [star necklace] was like $3 from the op shop. My [butterfly] earrings were made by my brother’s girlfriend. [These cross earrings] I got from the op shop and my seconds, I found somewhere. And these bracelets are from hard rubbish.
My bag is a Crumpler that I got second hand from my aunt, and my jacket is $15 from the Savers in my neighbourhood.
DK: It’s so cool how you can make such an interesting and creative look for so cheap.
Does anything inspire you when you get dressed in the morning?
Violet: I get inspired by people I see in the streets of Brunswick. The Lesbians of Brunswick. And Andrew. He is my number 1 fashion inspiration.
Total outfit: $39
