Happy Holidays from Ubique!

By our editors, Beth Thomas-Richards and Conor Ammett

What a year it’s been! As usual, Uni High has been a busy hive of activity and working, with many annual events running smoothly and to a high standard. In the Performing Arts domain, we heard two wonderful concerts, one mid-way through the year and the other at the end. The school musical this year was Chicago, displaying the many, many talents of all the students who go to our school (the performance included acrobatics, tap dancing, juggling, dancing, acting, singing, instrumental music and more)! And of course, there is the Cupcake Concert for the woodwind players at our school, as well as the Music Performance classes who perform weekly for their peers, not to mention the Year 9 and 10 Drama classes who bust their asses to present some kick-ass plays.

Our school also showed off the talents of our visual art students in the yearly art show Panorama. There were some exceptional pieces of all mediums, from the Studio Art works to the Visual Communication and Design works, through to Media and Product Design too. It’s really lovely to have the opportunity to share your hard work and to show others what you can achieve when you are determined and persistent. This of course extends to the Sports domain also, where yet again Uni High had representatives at the Regional and State level for various sports.

For some, 2017 would have been a lot of ups and downs, but I often find that upon reflection you can learn many great things from experience regardless of whether it was a positive or negative one. I know one important thing I learnt through this year is to always look after yourself first- you can’t help the people around you if you’re not doing great so make sure to practice plenty of self-care and love, and then to always look out for the people around you, you never know what others are going through!

This year for Ubique, the editorial role was handed down from Aidan and Sara, to us, Conor and Beth. We cannot thank enough all of the contributions and articles we have been sent this year, Ubique cannot run without all of the hardworking students that contribute to the magazine, whether it’s a single article or a whole number of pieces and art throughout the year.

Although 2017 is not yet over, I encourage you all to spend some time reflecting upon the year that has passed, and spend time thinking about what you have learnt and how you have grown throughout the year. I know that for myself, if I don’t take enough time to slow down and think about all the things I have achieved and all the lessons that I have learnt, then it can be useless doing those tasks in the first place. Take these summer holidays to relax and recover from the busy year that has been, and get excited for what 2018 has to offer! I know that I personally cannot WAIT to start year 12 (even though it will be very challenging)! Stay safe and have fun everyone!
