Culture Shock!
By Jasmin Tran
A true shock happened on the 1st of June. It was culture day at University High School and it was a huge event. Several events were happening to celebrate the multiple cultures that are at Uni High. Everything from a fashion show to food stalls, it was truly an incredible day.
Culture day was a day where everyone came out of their comfort zone. It was a day that brought new people together and a day that was unique to our school. Everyone put themselves out there and showed their culture in their own way. Proud faces were found everywhere on that day and the events spoke for themselves with how big the turnout was. Never in a million years would the Young Women's Club thought it could become this successful, the hard work paid off.
The fashion show was held in the 600s during recess and there was a huge crowd. People were filling up the halls and there were still more people to watch this incredible show of culture and fashion. The cultures that participated in the fashion show were; Turkey, China, Ethiopia, Somalia, Eritrea , Albania, Indigionous Australia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Germany, Pakistan, India, Iraq, Sudan, Algeria and many more. The traditional clothing everyone wore was absolutely beautiful in their own way.
There were many unique food stores in the Performance Center at lunchtime where there was a lot of food, a lot of music and a whole lot of dancing. There was a huge variety of stalls in the performance center, there was Jalebi, Gulab Jaman, Sambusas, Somali tea, biscuits, Ethiopian coffee, Indian crisps and many more. You can find videos at (@ubiqueuhs). Everyone had a great time and smiles were everywhere and of course people enjoying great food.
In conclusion, culture day was a huge success and it surprised the whole school as well as the Young Women’s Club. With this huge success, we can hope that in future years, culture day will continue as such a big event in our school.
