Uni High's Clubs!

An Insight Into Some of the Clubs at Unihigh

Written by Ariya Grooters and Tanisha Gupta

We went to most of the clubs at UniHigh that are held during school hours, experienced them and interviewed the participants. We sadly were not able to attend all of them with the limited time we had, but got a good look into most of them.

We surveyed some students and many of them weren’t aware that most of these clubs existed/weren’t sure exactly how to join or where to get information on them. So we decided to write this for those people, hopefully to help those interested in joining a club. UniHigh has a lot of clubs. There are several, during luck, recess and even after school. Here is a copy of the timetable of clubs in term 2:

For further information visit this website. From our experience, UniHigh has a very active community in terms of extracurriculars and events. Take for example cultural day, where we saw so many cultures being represented as well as fashion shows, performances etc. We decided to take a look at the clubs being offered at UniHigh

Knitting Club - TUESDAY RECESS AT LIBRARY READING ROOM.

How to join: You can just show up. For further information, contact Ms. Nell Day in the Library.

About the club: Knitting club had a very calm atmosphere. Everyone was sitting in various places around the room and knitting. The teachers were very nice and were teaching us how to knit. We interviewed Jo, who likes knitting a lot and is very skillful. She’s in the middle of knitting a very well-crafted sock. Knitting club was really fun.

Library committee - FORTNIGHTLY TUESDAY LUNCHTIME IN THE LIBRARY READING ROOM

How to join: The Google classroom code is cxjofzs and you can contact Ms Bianca Oder in the Library for further information.

They mostly plan displays for the library, they make them and hang them up. They help out with workshops, book sales, and the organization of the library and help run and provide resources for them. For example, they made badge templates for the NAIDOC week badge making workshop inthe library soon, and are making posters for that as well. They also got to write an article about their experiences in the library for a magazine. We interviewed Nina and Kai and they said the library committee club is pretty hands on, fun and “pretty sick”. Not just sitting around and talking but helping around in the library.

Chess Club - TUESDAY AND THURSDAY LUNCH AT 319.

How to join: You can just show up. For further information, you can contact Mr Paatsch.

About the Club: We went to this club and played a game of chess ourselves. It was a calm, relaxing environment and a fun time. We interviewed Daksh Sharma, Joe White and Oren Johnson who sometimes go to the chess club. They said “it's a great place, a great environment and a great place to hang out with people with similar interests as you“. Chess club is a great place to go to play chess and hang out. It sounds really great.

Dungeons and Dragons Club - WEDNESDAY LUNCH IN THE LIBRARY READING ROOM

How to join: Just show up. Classroom code 7yodx5b

About the club: We interviewed Logan Nordon-Quake, Lilith Coomans and Theodore Strobel from the Dungeons and Dragons Club. They were extremely nice and welcoming. The dungeons and dragons club members work together to build a safe community for all experience levels and ages. “We create and run our own campaigns, welcoming both homebrew and classic rules and classes. We also encourage the development of characters, teaching people how to create their own character to play their first campaign, as well as sharing DnD art.” they said. It seems like a great community to go have fun for everyone, both beginner and experienced players.

Gardening Club - THURSDAY AT HUMANITIES OFFICE

How to join: You can just show up. For further information, you can contact Ms Chetty.

About the club: The aim of the gardening club is to help those with an interest in gardening that cannot garden to garden. They plant and take care of plants around the school, learn how to take care of plants and take plants home in a competition to see who can take care of plants the best. Ms Chetty carefully demonstrates what the members have to do and the friendly members diligently do what needs to be done. The gardening club is a great place for those interested in gardening and sounded like a really fun club. We interviewed Zoi, Raph, Arden, Amara, Ms Chetty and Iris, who were all very nice.

Coding Club (Game Development club) - FRIDAY RECESS IN THE LIBRARY READING ROOM

About the club: We interviewed Gautier and Khan who told us about how the coding club was participating in a National game design tournament. The coding club split into 4 separate groups and each group is working on a separate game from scratch. The coding club is a great place for individuals who are interested in coding and developing their computer skills.

Classics Club - FRIDAY LUNCH AT 140.

About the club: In the classics club we read and interpreted the story of Niobe. They usually read interesting stories about Greek myths, Ancient Rome etc. and learn lots of interesting things. They are currently reading the collection Metamorphoses. Ms Garra Riley guides you through these stories with captivating narration, images and explanations. This club is great for people who are passionate about mythology.

Beekeeping Club - AFTER SCHOOL FRIDAY (3.30pm-4.30pm) AT LOTE OFFICE.

How to join: You can just show up. For further information, contact Mr Tiernan in the LOTE office.

Sadly, we were unable to attend this club, however we got in touch with one of the members so they can tell us all about it.

About the club: We interviewed Ana Vasanth Koodalithazhathuveedu. Recently, in the beekeeping club, the members have been making bee hives since the bees are hibernating. “It is really fun, and satisfactory, an hour passes by really quickly, you are just sandpapering and hammering, it's a good hands-on experience and you get to learn and care for bees!” she said. This club is great for getting involved with nature and bees, having a good time, and learning new things.

All of these clubs were fun, a great way to learn new things, and had a great community. We highly recommend that all of you join a club. For the clubs we were not able to go to, they either clashed with things we had and we were not able to attend, were seniors only, were not on the week we went to all of the clubs etc. However they all sounded really fun too! We encourage every student at UniHigh to join a club.
