Meet The SRC Nominees!
BY EVE BECKER, HUNTER JOSEPH & WILLIAM FARRUGIA
The Ubique Team reached out to all students who were nominated for roles. Unfortunately, we only had the chance to interview two of the nominees for the SRC role.
ANYA
Anya is a year nine student who never expected to be nominated. She volunteers for the charity, aims to produce more leaders, and luckily, we had a chance to interview her and asked her some questions.
Would you mind telling our readers a little bit about yourself?
Hello, I’m Anya. I’m currently in year nine. In my free time, I volunteer for a charity, and I’ve been acting since I was about eight years old, so about year 3.
Why were you nominated for this role?
I was in a bit of shock that I was nominated. I did not expect that, but I’m really grateful for the opportunity. I did speak to the person who nominated me, and she really did mention that since I’ve come to this school, I’ve always shown interest in the principle of karma. What you do is what you get and people should always be self selflessly giving, so I sort of always practice that principle, and she said that was the reason that she nominated me. Because she knew that whatever I would do, I would always help the school or the students.
What do you aim to do if you are elected?
I want to produce more leaders. I think that a huge thing we’re noticing nowadays is that especially due to the rise of social media, a lot of people are looking to be influenced, whether it’s in buying products or in doing something. I think it would be really good if we started creating more leaders so they know what is good and what’s not good.
Is there something unique you hope to bring to this role?
Yeah, especially because my aim is to produce leaders, I have a lot of expertise in that area, and I know a lot of people with expertise in that area. It’s not necessarily all about me, it’s about who I can involve (with). I’m trying to start a volunteering club and I’m currently volunteering for a charity. I’m currently participating in a lot of public speaking events because I want to show students that it’s about more than just pushing them. It’s about pushing ourselves as well.
Is there anything else you’d like to say to the potential voters?
Vote for the person who you think is right for the school. It’s not always about what your friends are going to vote for, it’s more about what you want.
ZAARA
We also had the chance to meet up with Zaara. She’s a year eight student who enjoys traveling and places great importance on listening to student voices.
Would you mind telling our readers a little bit about yourself?
I’m Zaara Khayer, I am in class 8G2, and I’ve been here since year 7. I love travelling, I love reading, and creative writing. I’ve travelled to around 15 countries with my family. I collect magnets wherever I go and I love taking photos.
Why were you nominated for this role?
Well I was the school captain in my primary school, and I love collaborating with my peers, and I wanted to do the same at Unihigh. I mean I’ve grown so attached to it over the two years I’ve been here. I felt that it would be good to take part in the effort of making Unihigh the great school that it is.
What do you aim to do if you are elected?
I hope to allocate more funds to perhaps excursions for us. I mean I know we already have such great workshop programs for us, but I would hope for more class excursions. I also want to bring more student voices to leadership, because I feel that this is such a great thing starting up this year. I know that last year this wasn’t in place, so I think bringing more student voices to leadership would be very good for Unihigh.
Is there something unique you hope to bring to this role?
Well, other than multiculturalism, I do have a lot of experience with the school council. I mean I was on the Junior School Council in primary school, and also I feel that being a SEAL student in the council would help bring more voice to it, and would give more of a voice to the school population.
Is there anything else you’d like to say to the potential voters?
I know that everyone has heard the same old thing, “vote for me I can bring change”, but this isn’t just about one person taking up a seat and their ideas. It’s about the whole student voice being heard. It's such a great new program that’s being introduced to Unihigh, and I feel that if you vote for me it’s not just my say, it’s our say. As Theodore Roosevelt said “We are the government, you and I.”
These two talented nominees are keen to make the school a better place, so make sure to vote! This is your school, and voting is a chance to make your voice heard at Unihigh.
Voting closes at 4pm on the 29 March as it has been extended due to a ballot error. By now all students would’ve received their new green ballot in a letter. Please make sure that when you cast your ballot, you keep both the ballot paper envelope and named envelope when you return it to the office so that there isn't any ballot harvesting.
