“I had a particular birthday where after some friends had left and the small party was done, I cried with happiness for the first time. maybe it's not the best childhood memory but it's one that sticks out,” a UniHigh student recounts their fondest childhood memory.

Another year has almost passed, in fact, too quickly! It feels like not too long ago, we were still wildly running around the crowded playgrounds of our primary schools without a care in the world. Though, as we grow older, life just becomes more and more difficult as we are faced with countless obstacles. Oftentimes we can get so caught up in the busy present that we forget about the past. To relieve some of that stress, let’s take a stroll through memory lane and relive our nostalgic childhood memories! We conducted a survey asking you guys about what your childhood was like, including the activities or food you had growing up. We’ll showcase some responses, and see if you can identify with any familiar experiences. Let’s forget about everything and be children once more!

We saw a lot of cultural diversity in our responses, with several people being born or growing up in Australia as well as overseas, including England, China, India, Malaysia, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam and Hong Kong. Despite many of our different walks of life, we surprisingly still had many common experiences in our childhoods.

  • “It's tough to pick one because there are multiple that I really liked, but here's the funniest one: In India when I used to live in an apartment, my mom got angry at me so she threw her phone at me. But don't worry, it didn't hurt because I was standing in the balcony and dodged the phone with my quick reflexes. Then, the phone went plummeting down onto the ground outside. It didn't break because it was inside the cover and we lived on like the 3rd floor but me and my mom both laughed a lot after that.”

  • “Having more books come in the mail, hanging out with my parents, cooking with my mom”

  • “Chinese New Year and Wedding banquets were always fun”

  • “One of my best childhood memories was writing and performing small scale musicals with my friends at school. We would write them in the canteen in the span of a week and then beg our classroom teacher to perform them to the rest of the class, one afternoon”

  • “When I left my baby doll and came back to it doing a handstand (convinced it was alive)”

  • “Catching butterflies in my primary school's garden”

  • “Getting a jumping castle in our backyard when i was younger”

  • “I fell off a scarecrow”
