Five one-hour sessions!?

Here is a great investigative piece by Adya and Sumyi on next years (potential) new timetable. Great journalism, and we hope you enjoy. Also, let us know what you think in the google form at the end!

FIVE ONE-HOUR SESSIONS?

By Adya, Sumyi

A theory has been circulating in the school stating that there should only be five one-hour sessions per day starting next year. If the condition were to be verified as true, what would be the resulting consequences?

Besides that, we asked students to share if they support the change of class time or not. We have chosen Year 7 and Year 10 students because we believe that they are good representatives for the middle school students and the senior school students.

Q: Do you prefer six 50-minute classes or five 1-hour classes?

       Year 10 opinions:

The number of year 10 students agreeing to the class time change is very close to the number of students who prefer class time to stay the same. These are some comments from Year 10 students!

Fiona: I prefer six 50-minute classes because I can have more varied classes.

Sarah: I prefer 50 minutes per class because the class time is shorter.

Tanishaka: I prefer six classes because it’s easier for me to concentrate in a 50-minute class.

The main reasons that students want 50 minutes of class are because they feel more comfortable and easy to learn in a shorter class time and also they can have more different classes per day. Nevertheless, some students support extending the class time.

Vera: I prefer 50-minute classes because I think 50 minutes per class is more relaxed.

Tina: I prefer five 1-hour classes because it’s only ten minutes longer and I don’t have to do as many subjects

Tiffany: I prefer five 1-hour classes because of fewer sessions.

Alvina: I prefer five 1-hour classes because having the sixth class stressed me.

Students prefer longer class times mainly because having fewer classes can reduce their workload and lower their stress levels.

       Year 7 opinions:

Most Year 7 students are willing to adapt to this session timing format, as it is already familiar to them from their primary school education.

Levi: “It works for me as it was like this in my primary school.”

Like Levi, some other students also had the same opinion. However, others had differing thoughts on this matter. Here are a few examples:

Kayla: “I had nine-ten hours of school in my primary school so it doesn’t matter.

Mengyang: “We’ll five sessions sound weird cause we will not have equal no. of sessions before and after recess or lunch. Also, having a double period would give us an extra 20 minutes one subject for two hours may be tedious.”

Mengyang here had a great point but what if after this change we no longer have to endure double sessions? Just imagine, if this turns out to be great in the future.

Teacher Opinons

Mr. Campbell

During our interview, we spoke with Mr. Campbell, who thought that it would be interesting if the change would be implemented in the upcoming year. Although the school hours will remain the same, the school week will now consist of 25(5*5) sessions instead of the previous 30(6*5). This change will result in a modification of the timetable. Therefore, if this change is to be implemented we would have less       Mr. Campbell classes. Imagine having fewer English and math sessions in the future it would be great, but fewer music, art, or PE sessions would be devastating. Let’s keep the vital subjects intact.

What is your opinion???

We would love to hear your thoughts on this matter.
