What Year Level is Best Dressed?

By Hilary Lam & Esther Rinatta

As one of the only high schools in Australia that does not enforce school uniforms, The University High School holds a reputation for having a variety of different aesthetics and fashion tastes. Unlike most schools, our students, as well as staff, are given creative freedom to express themselves through their clothing and makeup. However, due to covid, there was not a lot of attention on the fashion of each year-level at the school. This year though, UBIQUE will be unearthing our students’ true opinions that they have for each other.

We conducted a survey that 170 people responded to, where participants rated each year level’s overall style on a scale of 1 to 10. Now, how juicy are these ratings? Well, there was a clear winner, but before that, let’s go through them together.

Our lovely, lovely Year 7s received a rating of 1/10 from 52.4% of our participants, which is 89 people. A bit harsh, but as the youngest cohort, there’s no need to worry. They have a lot of time to perfect their style.

Being at UniHigh one year longer than the Year 7s, our Year 8s did not raise the bar by much, still being rated a 1/10 by 69 people (40.6%). An improvement, no doubt, but definitely not up to UNIhigh’s quite critical standards.

Next up, we’ve got the Year 9s, an impressively tall year level of our school tradition. Not unlike the previous two-year levels, they landed a majority vote of 1/10. It seems that 38.8% of the participants still believe that year 9 does not have a very great clothing choice.

Coming in second place, being trendy as they are, Year 10 was rated 7/10 for their dressing style by 28.2% of the voting. This is a huge step up from Year 9, but is this good enough? Is second place the position to settle for?

And the Year 11s take first place with an undeniable rating of 10/10, with 35.9% of voters agreeing that they are the best dressed year level of UniHigh, 2023. After 5 years of experience, Year 11s have perfected their style and it is evident.

Somewhat surprisingly, our Year 12s received a rating of 1/10 by 34.1% of the voters. Not a good look, but can we blame them? After spending 6 years in school, dressing up is the least of their worries. Of course, we can’t discredit the Year 12s that put effort into looking stylish and fashionable while finishing up the busiest year of high school.

Of course, we did not forget about UniHigh’s hard-working and amazing teachers, who have a fashion sense of 1/10, rated by 41.2% of the students. It seems as though our students aren’t too impressed by the teachers’ sense of fashion. A generational difference, perhaps?

And that was the 2023 term 2 rating of best dressed year level, there is definitely an uneven score given to each year. Let UBIQUE know if you would like to have another contest.
